Blow Back (english) A coating defect consisting of a lower coating film weight on the bottom of the coated sheet caused by high velocity air in the oven. Blow back usually occurs with high solids coatings which have little solvent to evaporate and "set" the film.
BOLT KIT (english) A set of bolts or screws that ore selected to suit a particular application, i.e. pre-selected length, threads and strength to match the mounted component.
Bridle (english) A set of rolls used to maintain tension on the strip as it goes through the line.
Z-Mill (english) The full name for z-mill is Sendzimir mill. A Z-mill operates with a very small diameter work roll, normally about 2 inches, backed up by a number of rolls in a pyramid-shaped stack. This roll set up allows you to exert extremely high forces through the work roll and yet keep the work roll from extreme flexing. The take-up roll on the Z-Mill also exerts a tension on the coil as it comes through the mill. The combination of high pressure and tension makes the mill capable of rolling material thin and flat.
Couple: (english) A system of forces composed of two equal forces of opposite direction, offset by a distance. A couple is statically equivalent to a moment whose magnitude equals the magnitude of the force times the offset distance.
Load: (english) An external force. The term load is sometimes used to describe more general actions such as temperature differentials or movements such as foundation settlements.
Clarifier (sedimentation basin) (Environmental Engineering) A tank in which quiescent settling occurs, allowing solid particles suspended in the water to agglomerate and settle to the bottom of the tank. The solids resulting from the settling being removed as a sludge.
Colloids (Environmental Engineering) Small particles which have a negligible settling velocity. These particles have a very small mass so gravitational force is low compared to surface frictional forces. Typical colloidal sizes range from 10-3 mm to 1 mm.
Compression settling (Environmental Engineering) Settling which occurs in the lower reaches of clarifiers where particle concentrations are highest. Particles can settle only by compressing the mass of particles below.
Discrete settling (Environmental Engineering) Settling in which individual particles settle independently, neither agglomerating or interfering with the settling of the other particles present. This occurs in waters with a low concentration of particles.
